Kirkjufell mountain on the Snaefellsnes peninsula is by far the most photographed mountain in Iceland. Often Nicknamed ‘The Lonely Mountain’ or ‘The Matterhorn of Iceland’, this stunning, free standing mountain, is loved by photogrophers for its shape and symmetry.
Kirkjufell is 463 meters (1,519 feet) tall and is located just down the road from the small picturesque town of Grundarfjörður. Directly translated into English, Kirkjufell means ‘Church Mountain’.
Its isolated position jutting out into the sea makes it a focal point for tourists and locals alike, and it’s even more impressive in the multicolored Icelandic winter sky.
